Volunteer managers ‘lack training’ says new report

Friday, September 3rd, 2010

IVR HomeReport by Skills – Third Sector says 42 per cent have had no training at all

More than four out of 10 people who manage volunteers have not received any training, according to a report released recently.

Despite identifying much good practice in volunteer management, the study by the Institute for Volunteering Research, called Valuing Volunteer Management, concluded it is undervalued and underfunded in many charities.

The report draws on responses from more than 1,000 volunteer managers at third sector organisations in England.

It said 42 per cent of people managing volunteers have not received any training that would help them to carry out that work. In organisations with more than 50 staff the figure was 20 per cent.

The report found 86 per cent of respondents would welcome extra training or skills development. However, volunteer managers were often unaware of how to access the training, advice and support available.

The report calls for greater policy focus on how people managing volunteers in small groups might be better supported, and further research to explore the trend of using volunteers to manage other unpaid staff.

The research was commissioned by training charity Skills – Third Sector.

Julie Wilkes, its chief executive, said the government’s big society agenda relied on civic action and volunteering. She said her organisation was drawing up a skills strategy prioritising creating “flexible and affordable learning opportunities” for volunteer managers.

New Emphasis on Cafe Culture Learning

Friday, August 27th, 2010

Department for Business, Innovation and Skills

Skills Minister John Hayes today called on all UK businesses to promote informal learning at work, following pledges from sixty-four innovative companies to increase informal workplace training for their staff.

These companies, including 11 from the FTSE 350, represent nearly two million employees. They formed part of a recent ‘Café Culture’ campaign run by Business in the Community on behalf of the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS) to improve workers’ skills.

They include:

*Barclays Bank
*BT
*Channel 4
*FirstGroup
*Ginsters
*Google
*McDonald’s Restaurants
*Microsoft

The central aim of ‘Cafe Culture’ is to promote good practice among employers, so BIS and Business in the Community have today published ‘Building the Cafe Culture Movement’ to help other organisations to see the benefits of informal adult learning at work.

The resource includes case studies showing how successful companies have seen the business benefits of informal learning, alongside guidance on how to follow in their footsteps.

The ‘Cafe Culture’ campaign, which has been running since 2009, has involved a wide range of sectors, including manufacturing, finance, construction, utilities and food and drink companies.

It took its inspiration from the idea of a wider cafe culture, where people meet informally to share ideas in a fun and relaxed environment. By translating this to an office environment, the intention has been to encourage people to work together as teams to support creativity and improve skills.

‘Building the Café Culture Movement’ can be downloaded from the Business in the Community website at: http://www.bitc.org.uk/workplace/skills/index.html

The course encourages participants to employ creative methods to help disabled young people communicate their thoughts, wishes and feelings. All course materials were selected in consultation with disabled young people.

Lucy Aston, disability project worker at The Children’s Society, said: “Disabled young people need to be able to fully contribute to their reviews and planning meetings, and this course gives the skills to facilitate this.”

Volunteering opportunity to assist ex-offenders

Friday, August 13th, 2010

For further information on SOVA click here:

The On- Track Project from SOVA offers support to those serving a sentence who are within 12 months of release. To enable this to happen we will be looking to offer a mentoring service for clients whilst in custody (when possible) and upon release (in the community). Volunteer mentors offer ex-offenders support and guidance through a very difficult time in their life. Being in prison is a very daunting experience and coming out to face many issues such as homelessness, drugs issues and stigma. Mentoring offers the ex-offender resources and support so they can feel empowered, to overcome issues and to start to build a positive and happier future for themselves and those around them.

The project offers mentors the opportunity to complete a OCN accredited course, An opportunity to gain knowledge and experience in working with both ex-offenders and adults with additional needs and all travel and refreshments expenses will be paid for. We do however ask that volunteers can commit to 2 or more hours a week, are over 18 years of age and be committed to SOVA’s Philosophy and guidelines.

SCIO Training dives into the world wide web of Social Networking

Friday, August 13th, 2010

skillbase logo

Things are moving quickly in the world of social interaction. As an organisation that relies on people in the community, SDVS need to keep up to date and ride the wave of progress, else risking drowning under it.

SCIO Training are testing the waters so to speak (I’ll stop with the ocean related puns now, I promise) with our branching out online; acquiring a Facebook page, Twitter account and Wordpress blog to help get our objectives out to more people than ever, as well as linking up with Stafford Direct’s community participation in the Race Online initiative.

This is partly an experiment too; we’re looking to see exactly how much of a difference an increased online presence will have in our work. In theory, extra publicity will lead into greater uptake of our services: the more that know what we do, the better we can market to potential clients.

One fear is that this is could be offset by the amount of effort per client – the path of least resistance is great if it’s also the most effective path. So we are balancing pros and cons to decide on the most efficient strategy, simultaneously reducing the risk of wasted time.

Working together is the best way forward. Thankfully we’re not going into this alone, with support from Social Media Surgeries and Stafford Direct, ICT Champions and our own people, SCIO Training is confidently breaking new ground in the social theatre.

Once we have established some of the needs of voluntary and community groups, SCIO Training intends to offer training in use of Social Media, both its relevance and how to best use the many tools available. Watch “Headlines” and the SCIO Training mailings/blog for details of these. And, if there’s enough interest, SCIO Training will offer inexpensive help and consultancy on your use of Social Media.

Winning a bigger buck for the bang

Friday, July 9th, 2010

Training to support the third sector with contracts for public service delivery dates announced:

The sector currently delivers over £12 billion worth of public services for the various tiers of government. Much of this money comes to the sector in grant funding. That is changing. We live in a time of spending cuts, changing governmental policies and an increased demand on the third sector for service provision. New initiatives like World Class Commissioning, the Personalisation of Public Services and changes to local authority structure are changing the commissioning environment.

The impact of this is particularly challenging for smaller VCS organisations, many of whom lack the resources or the experience to bid for and win contracts or perhaps to engage with the commissioner in the consultative stages when the tender specification is being developed. Smaller organisations also have a difficult job keeping abreast of changes to legislation and policy and adapting to changes.

This shows the crucial role a strong second tier infrastructure sector can play in developing and expanding the capacity for the front-line to win government contracts and secure sub-contracts, with larger organisations.

Our programme comprises five different training topics, delivered by experts in these particular fields. You can book onto all five events and get a major grounding in procurement and commissioning or you can pick and choose the most relevant topics to you and expand your existing expertise. The aim of the programme is to help give you the skills you need to support the groups you work with. To help them to develop opportunities and to win the contracts they need to keep on delivering their vital work!
