Headlines- Olympics in Staffordshire

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

ORGANISATIONS hoping to attract volunteers for Olympic-theimage001 (2)med projects in 2012 are being invited to a workshop where they can promote their plans and get expert advice on the best approach.

The Games are expected to generate thousands of volunteering opportunities, both around running the sporting events themselves as well as Olympic-inspired community and sporting projects in the future which organisers hope will be the Games’ lasting legacy.

It is estimated that around 70,000 volunteers will be needed to run the London-based events but there will also be events and training for visiting athletes using sports venues in Staffordshire where help will be needed.

The workshop at the Bridge Centre, in Birches Head, Stoke-on-Trent on October 12th  is open to all voluntary and community groups who would like to use the opportunity that the 2012 Olympics provides, to increase the diversity of volunteers involved in their own activities.  Led by staff from national governing body, Volunteering England in partnership with YouthNet, it will look at how best to market current volunteering opportunities, how to create new, Olympic inspired opportunities and how to encourage wider participation from people of all backgrounds.

Tracy Ellis, Co-ordinator for North Staffordshire Volunteer Centres, which is facilitating the workshop, said: “The countdown has begun to the 2012 Games which are just two years away. It might sound a long time away but the sooner people start thinking about Olympic-themed events and the ways that they can inspire people to volunteer locally, the better.

“For example, Walk North Staffordshire, a healthy walk scheme, is looking to get people to do 20 walks in 12 months – giving a 2012 figure- and this will need more volunteer walk leaders.

We would like to develop hundreds of ideas like this to celebrate the Olympics, both during the Games and afterwards, fostering community sports, cultural, environmental and arts events. All are going to need volunteers to help run them – individuals who may be attracted to volunteering for the very first time.”

The workshop in October is the ideal opportunity for voluntary and community organisations who would like to use the spirit of the Olympics to inspire new local volunteering opportunities and increase the number of people volunteering.

Friday, June 25th, 2010

image The World Wheelchair Basketball Championships are coming to the West Midlands, they will take place at the NIA in Birmingham from the 7th to the 17th July.

The Championships features 12 men’s and 10 women’s teams from around the world, and the event organisers are on the lookout for Volunteer Attachés to support the teams progress in the competition.  The Volunteer Attaches should act as the link between the competition organisers and the teams taking part in the event.  This exciting role can start from the 3rd/4th July when the teams arrive in the UK, right through to the final.

Volunteers will be provided with a hot meal at lunchtime and in the evening if they are working  at those times, as well as a poloshirt and travel expenses (up to a £5 limit per day).  Volunteers should be available during the daytime for this period, although they are not expected to be available for every day, competing teams will be shared between groups of attaches.  This opportunity would suit unemployed people, retired people or those in education available at this time.

Lottery support for sport to be increased

Friday, May 21st, 2010

Sport England has welcomed the announcement by the Secretary of State for Culture, Olympics, Media and Sport that National Lottery support for sport is to be increased.

Jeremy Hunt MP said legislation will be placed before Parliament in September that could see sport, along with arts and heritage, receiving an extra £50 million a year from the National Lottery.

Under the proposals, the share of money going to sport good causes will increase from its current level of 16.66% to 18% in 2011-12 and then 20% in 2012-13.

Welcoming the news, Sport England’s Chair, Richard Lewis, said: “The National Lottery has had a huge impact on the opportunities for people of all ages to play and enjoy sport.

“These proposals will see even more sporting projects, big and small, benefiting from Lottery investment.”
